Hazardous Waste Operations 40 Hour Training will review potential hazards, how employers can create a safe work environment, and techniques employees can use to protect themselves.
Regulatory Knowledge
- Review the core elements of 29 CFR 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and 1910.1200 Hazard Communication.
Technical Knowledge
- An understanding of basic hazardous materials terms
- An understanding of their role in the emergency response, including contacting emergency response personnel and reviewing DOT’s updated Emergency Response Guidebook
- Identify chemical hazards through labeling, signage, placards, monitoring equipment as well as naturally occurring chemicals found in utility construction environments
- Understand hazard and risk assessment techniques for potential exposures to chemical hazards; recognition of the types of human responses to hazards and principles of toxicology
- Understand fire and explosion hazards of chemicals
Technical Skills
- Selection, use, maintenance and limitations of personal protective equipment (PPE) as it pertains to chemical usage
- Be able to perform basic control, containment, and confinement operations within the capabilities of the resources and PPE available to employees
- Decontamination procedures including personnel, equipment, and hardware
- Field activities including the donning and doffing of PPE to a level commensurate with the anticipated job functions and responsibility, and to the degree required by the potential hazards
