Established by Toyota in the 1950s as 5S, a sixth S has been added to increase the focus on Safety. In addition to Safety, the other five S represent five Japanese disciplines for maintaining visual control at a workplace – SeiriSeitonSeisoSeiketsu, and Shitsuke – that can be translated from the Japanese to SortSet in OrderShineStandardize, and Sustain.
