Ray brings a deep passion for optimizing performance and over 35 years of bringing broad business experience to the organizations with which he has been involved. He worked for eight years in several roles at Digital Equipment Corporation, lastly as a Strategic Planning Consultant. Thereafter, Ray founded and ran a strategic planning consulting practice for another eight years. He still facilitates client development of strategic plans to help them address “Context of the Organization” requirements – including process (SIPOC) maps, Quality Objectives (KPIs) & “Process Turtles.”
Beginning in 2003, Ray functioned for over seven years as the Quality Manager, Lead Internal Quality Auditor, and de-facto ISO Management Representative for a rapidly growing ISO 9001-certified environmental process equipment designer and manufacturer. In his first three years, he was instrumental in slashing their Total Cost of Quality by 43.2% – saving over $2,000,000. Most recently, Ray worked for two and a half years as a QMS Lead, Lead Internal AS9100 Auditor, and SME in RCCA, AS9100, AS9104 & ISO 19011 for a major defense communications contractor.
He has taught 150+ ISO 9001, 13485, AS9100, and AS9110 Lead Auditor courses, over 30 Root Cause & Corrective Action classes, and 15+ Risk Management courses, and is often sought out as an instructor and auditor. Ray has logged over 1,400 on-site audit hours, has conducted AS9100 and ISO 9001 audits for a leading worldwide registrar (CB), and consults to prepare organizations to become certified to those standards.
Since 2009, Mr. Hanson has been a Voting Member of TC 176 – the standards committee responsible for the next version of ISO 9001. Ray served as Program, Symposium, and Examining Chair of the Salt Lake Section of ASQ, as well as Board Chair from 2010-11. He was subsequently recognized with ASQ’s National Member Leader Excellence Award.
Ray is a Probitas Authentication Certified, OASIS-listed, AS9100 Aerospace Auditor, and is now a Plexus Approved AATT Instructor (ASDE). He is also an Exemplar Global Certified Lead ISO 9001 Auditor & Lead ISO 13485 Auditor. Mr. Hanson holds Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE), Certified Quality Auditor (CQA), and Certified Medical Device Auditor (CMDA) designations from the American Society for Quality (ASQ).
Ray earned a degree in Chemistry and an MBA in Finance & Systems from Brigham Young University. He later completed post-graduate work in Decision Support Systems, as well as Strategic Management, at MIT’s Sloan School of Management.
